Used & Core Transmissions in Hickory, NC

A rebuild isn't always the right call. Sometimes a used or replacement unit makes more sense, and if you're building your own, we sell cores. We'll tell you honestly which option fits your vehicle and budget.

We’re a rebuild shop first, but we don’t believe every transmission problem has to end in a rebuild. When it’s the better fit for your vehicle and your budget, we’ll put in a used or replacement unit, and we’ll tell you why.

That decision usually comes down to the vehicle. On a newer truck you plan to keep for years, a rebuild of your own unit, with every wear part inspected, is often the best value. On an older, higher-mileage car, a good used unit can get you back on the road for less. One customer had a smooth used transmission installed in a 2009 Subaru and said the job was done quickly and efficiently. For some units, including several CVTs, parts for a rebuild are hard to source, and a replacement unit is the more practical path.

Either way, installation is done the way we’d do our own. We match the unit to your exact year, engine and drive type. We flush the cooler and lines so debris from the old unit doesn’t get into the new one, refill with the correct fluid and road test before you pick it up.

We also sell core transmissions to people doing their own rebuilds. One customer who bought a core from us said we answered every question and even loaded it up for them. If you’re working on a project in Hickory or anywhere in the Catawba Valley and need a core, call and tell us what you’re after.

Not sure which way to go? Start with a diagnosis. Sometimes the fix is smaller than either option.

Signs you may need this service

  • Your transmission has failed and the vehicle is older or high-mileage
  • A full rebuild costs more than makes sense for the vehicle
  • Parts for your unit (often a CVT) are hard to source for a rebuild
  • You're rebuilding a transmission yourself and need a core
  • You need the vehicle back on the road and want to weigh every option

These are common signs — a real inspection is what confirms the cause.

What we check

  • Exact unit match for your year, engine, drive type and gearing
  • Condition of the replacement unit before it goes in
  • Cooler and lines, flushed so debris from the old unit doesn't contaminate the new one
  • Mounts, linkage and wiring connectors during installation
  • Fluid level and shift quality on the road test after install

How it works

  1. 1Talk through your vehicle, its condition and your budget.
  2. 2Compare options side by side: rebuild your unit, install a used unit, or another replacement.
  3. 3Source a correctly matched unit and confirm it before installing.
  4. 4Install, flush the cooler, refill and road test.
  5. 5For core purchases, help you confirm you've got the right unit and load it for you.

Frequently asked questions

Is a used transmission a good idea?

It can be, especially on an older or high-mileage vehicle where a rebuild costs more than the vehicle is worth to you. The trade-off is that a used unit's history is less known than a rebuilt one. We'll explain both honestly and let you decide.

Can I buy a core transmission from you?

Yes. If you're rebuilding your own unit or need a core, call with what you're looking for and we'll check what we have. We'll answer your questions and help you load it.

Do used units come with a warranty?

Coverage on used and replacement units can differ from coverage on our rebuilds. Ask for the warranty terms on the specific unit before you approve the work.
