We diagnose and repair continuously variable transmissions (CVTs) in Nissan, Subaru, Honda and other vehicles. We'll also be upfront about the one thing that makes CVTs harder than other units: parts can be hard to get.
Continuously variable transmissions don’t shift through gears the way a conventional automatic does. They use a steel belt or chain running between two variable-width pulleys. When they work, they’re smooth and efficient. When they fail, they tend to whine, shudder, or rev without the car pulling like it should.
We diagnose and repair CVTs in Nissan, Subaru, Honda and other vehicles, including the JATCO-built units used across many Nissan models and Subaru’s Lineartronic. Not every CVT complaint means the unit is finished. Fluid that’s old or the wrong type, a software issue, or a valve body fault can produce the same symptoms, and those are repairable. A good diagnosis is what tells the two apart.
There’s something you should hear before your car comes in. CVT parts can be very hard to get. Some internal parts aren’t sold separately, and some take a long time to arrive. That affects both cost and timing, and it’s why we don’t quote a CVT job until we know what can actually be sourced for your vehicle. Sometimes the most practical answer is a quality used or replacement unit instead of a rebuild. We’ll lay out each option and let you choose.
CVTs also take their own specific fluid. Using the wrong one, or skipping changes, is a common reason they fail early. If your CVT is still healthy, a correct fluid service is the cheapest protection you can buy.
If you’re in Hickory or anywhere in the Catawba Valley and your CVT is acting up, call us first. We’ll tell you plainly what we can do and how long it’s likely to take.
These are common signs — a real inspection is what confirms the cause.
Some CVT problems, such as fluid condition, software or a valve body issue, can be repaired without replacing the unit. If the belt or pulleys are damaged inside, the options narrow to a rebuild or a replacement unit, depending on what parts can be sourced.
Parts for many CVTs are harder to find than parts for conventional automatics, and some components aren't sold separately at all. We'll tell you up front what's available for your vehicle and how long it's likely to take, and we'll update you as it moves.
CVT coverage can differ from our standard transmission coverage. Ask for the warranty terms on your specific unit before you approve the work, and we'll put them in writing.
Yes. We see JATCO-built CVTs in Nissans and other models, Subaru Lineartronic units, and Honda CVTs among others. Call with your year and model and we'll tell you what we know about parts for it.
Tell us what your vehicle is doing and we’ll take it from there. The request takes a couple of minutes, or call and talk to the shop directly. Se habla español.
