Standard transmissions are half of what we specialize in. We handle complete clutch jobs, including the disc, pressure plate, throw-out bearing and flywheel, as well as manual gearbox repair and rebuilds for cars and trucks.
“Automatic and standard” has always been on our business card. Manual transmissions and clutches aren’t a side job for us. They’re half of what we specialize in, and we do them in-house on the same benches as our automatic rebuilds.
The most common job is a clutch. A slipping clutch, a high engagement point or a burning smell after a steep driveway usually means the disc is worn. But a clutch job done right covers more than the disc. We replace the pressure plate and throw-out bearing as a kit, check the pilot bearing, and measure the flywheel. Then we decide whether it can be resurfaced or needs to be replaced. We also check the hydraulics, because a leaking slave cylinder can feel exactly like a worn clutch.
One longtime customer had a clutch, pressure plate and throw-out bearing put in her Honda CR-V in three days. Another told us her car was ready on the day we promised, for the price we quoted. We can’t promise every job moves that fast. Parts availability varies. But we tell you what to expect up front and keep you updated.
When the problem is inside the gearbox itself, such as grinding synchros, a noisy bearing or a shifter that pops out of gear, we tear it down and rebuild it. We see everything from import five-speeds to heavy-duty truck units like the NV4500 and ZF 6-speed. Hilly roads and towing in the foothills around Hickory are hard on clutches, and we see plenty of both.
These are common signs — a real inspection is what confirms the cause.
Not always. Many flywheels can be resurfaced if they're within spec. Dual-mass flywheels usually can't be resurfaced and are replaced when worn. We'll measure yours and tell you which it is.
Grinding can come from a clutch that isn't fully releasing because of hydraulic or adjustment problems, or from worn synchronizers inside the gearbox. The repairs are different, and a test drive plus an inspection tells us which one you have.
It depends on the vehicle and parts availability. Many clutch jobs are done within a few days once parts are in hand. We'll give you a realistic time when we quote it and keep you posted.
Yes, both. That includes import cars and crossovers as well as heavy-duty truck gearboxes such as the NV4500 and ZF 6-speed.
